dell dimension 4300 (harddrive) help please
ok here is the scoop.  I am a sideline system builder/repair a friend from w
ork has a dell that is giving him fits with the harddrive supposedly, so he 
brings it over and asks me to reformat and reinstall windows xp.  Well he ca
n't find his winxp (dell) cd, so while he is finding it, i temporarily insta
ll my xp disc.  After a reformat and  reinstall, i get the following message
.

"Dell's disk monitoring system has detected that drive 0 on the primary EIDE
 controller is operating outside of normal specifications. It is advisable t
o immediately back up your data and replace your hard disk drive by calling 
your support desk or Dell Computer Corporation."

i go to the dell webpage and search and it says that it is smart drive detec
ting any possible failures at post. 

Is this true, or is it noticing that it is not a dell packaged Winxp disc.  
Is there a way of disabling this if it is just dell's system check.

Unfortunately, that message indicates that it's a failing drive.

The drive is dying.  Back up the data immediately and replace it.

That's definitely a failing hard drive message. Dells don't
care what XP disk you use as long as it's not someone else's
OEM one.

replace the drive and try to clone the image that you spent time building to
the new drive so you don't have to do that again.  if it is successful then
you have saved yourself lots of time.  look up the system tag number on
support.dell.com and see if the system is still under warranty.  if it is
then run dell hard disk diagnostics until it produces an error then call
dell and report the error for an instant drive replace without discussion
(or they will have you do this and then call them back).  if it is not under
dell warranty then look up the serial number on the drive and go to the
drive manufacturers web site as it *may* still be under warranty by them (no
longer the case, but used to be that maxtor and wd drives had 3 year
warranties regardless of what dell's warranty commitment was to you).
otherwise buy a new drive and try to clone the existing image to it before
spending time rebuilding from scratch...

methinks you didn't read the op carefully.  he said he reformatted and
reinstalled an os on the original drive but still gets an error and his
concern was that perhaps the error message was a result of using a version
of windows not supplied by dell.  his error message has nothing to do with
windows and it was a mistake to spend time reloading the os without first
testing the drive.  but having done that, he try to make the best of a bad
situation and clone the image from the current drive to a new one.  the
current drive is still working despite its warning of emanate failure.  so
why not try to clone the existing image from the current problematic drive
to a new good drive and not have to reload the os etc from scratch.
additionally i offered tips on how to get a repayment expeditiously...  none
of this was suggested by others and so i thought i would contribute these
thoughts.
