That is what an RC means; only "show stoppers" will be addressed now; no
more functionality upgrades.

Re: XP SP2 RC2 contains final version of XP Tablet Edition 2005 ?
That is correct. The Windows XP Service Pack 2 for the XP operating system
on which the Tablet PC Edition superset rides will automatically update
Tablets to the 2005 version. The SP2 update on Media Center Edition
computers will also provide the users with the MCE 2004 superset if they
haven't already updated it through the OEM of their system.

Has RC2 received the midas touch yet?

Re: XP SP2 RC2 contains final version of XP Tablet Edition 2005 ?
Hmmm, what if you don't like some of the changes made with SP2, like the new
lack
of write anywhere? In the past you had a choice, you just didn't buy the ne
w OS
if you preferred not to upgrade. But since the upgrade is also a service pa
ck for
the underlying OS, can you avoid it? Is SP2 a mandatory thing? I mean, is i
t a
rollup of existing hotfixes and security updates (thus, if you are diligent,
you
already have them), or is it truly necessary for security and functionality'
s
sake? For example, will it contain some security update(s) that I can't get
elsewhere that will leave me vulnerable to an exploit? Can I get the
stabilizing/security features of the service pack for the *exisitng* OS with
out
having to actually upgrade?

Re: XP SP2 RC2 contains final version of XP Tablet Edition 2005 ?
You know quite honestly I fought about Write Anywhere in the beginning.
After two or three days of usage, I very much prefer the new Tablet Input
Panel, the floating TIP icon (always available) and the improved
recognition. I wouldn't want the other one back at any price.
And I believe you'll like the security features of SP2, too.

Re: XP SP2 RC2 contains final version of XP Tablet Edition 2005 ?
In one of the Channel9 videos a while back, Rebecca Norlander (Group Manager
of SP2 team) explained that the reason SP2 is so large is because many of t
he binaries are being recompiled with a managed compiler. I'm assuming that
you would need to get SP2
itself to get these. Personally I think the added security greatly outweigh
s any smaller issues.

Re: XP SP2 RC2 contains final version of XP Tablet Edition 2005 ?
I agree. I missed the write anywhere as well and also the 2 lines writing
which enables you to just write and write and write before actually sending
the text to the application. The increased security, recognition, ability to
edit the recognized text, ability to scratch to erase (more widely
available) and lots more options for developers of ink enabled applications
will give the tablet an immense usability boost. I forgot about the 2
painpoints already :-)

Re: XP SP2 RC2 contains final version of XP Tablet Edition 2005 ?
I think a big annoyance with the SP2 TIP is that it can't be left floating.
This causes a problem as many applications do not properly manipulate the
system caret. I encountered this problem when I first created the "in place
TIP" prior to SP2 and it looks like Microsoft has the same problem.
The only way to use the input panel in these apps (Java apps, Mozilla,
flash, Remote Desktop, etc) is to dock it which takes up a ton of space.
I think Einstein Technologies might try to address some of these issues in
the near future. :)

Re: XP SP2 RC2 contains final version of XP Tablet Edition 2005 ?
The dungeon siege problem is probably the same problem as other DirectX apps
that use the mouse for input. Basically because the digitizer's sample rate
is so much higher than a mouse, it sends packets to the game too frequently.
Since games don't look at the mouse as an absolute x/y position, just as
changes, this results in erratic movement with the pen.
But just to set the record straight, caret tracking and ink aware are two
completely different concepts. Caret tracking was designed for accessibility
so that assists could be made for people with disabilities. The input panel
uses this to its advantage to determine where focus is. (Not just focus, but
insertion point in the case of a full screen text area such as VS.NET).
So in the end, bottom line... not all apps support caret tracking. So in my
opinion, the TIP should still be able to float. Which is what I was trying
to say from the beginning. :)
