This sounds the same as the Standby problem described by many people in the
Motion Computing LS800. This was discussed extensively in a Tablet PC Buzz
thread (http://www.tabletpcbuzz.com/forum/t...?TOPIC_ID=34347).
Although many people raised hypotheses about a particular program causing
the problem, none of those hypotheses held up. The best we came up with was
the workaround of manually choosing Standby, not going into Standby via
Power Settings.

It would be helpful to figure out which computers have this problem.
Although individual users may not experience the problem on a particular
model of tablet that may be because they are not using a particular program
that triggers the problem. Has anyone seen this problem on other computer
models besides Toshiba M400 and Motion LS800?

Not (yet?) on my HP tc1100.

If this problem affects all Tablet PCs then it is an issue for Microsoft to
fix in Windows or for some user-installed program maker to fix in a program
common to all those affected by the problem. If the problem affects only
some Tablets, such as the Toshiba M400 and the Motion LS800, the computer
companies should figure out what hardware components or utility programs are
the common factor.

Someone should make sure that Toshiba and Motion know that other companies
are also looking into this - a joint effort is more likely to be successful.

The Standby issue may be more likely to be noticed in the Motion LS800
because it is a computer that is often just pulled out of a pocket to check
something, making it more likely that the Power Settings will be set to
invoke Standby.

In my case, the issue is certainly not the standby function of the
operating system. When the screen is glitched, the system is clearly
not in standby but has instead, simply turned of the display to
conserve power prior to going into standby. (something that it would do
10 minutes after the screen is shut off if no activity is detected)

So in my mind it's more of a Toshiba/chipset issue than a windows
operating system issue.

RE: Toshiba M400 Freezes up in Standby
I have also the exact same problem with my M400. Seeing that a solution
hasn't been posted
here, I called Toshiba. The Good news: The Toshiba technician was availabl
e
within 30 seconds! The bad news: The only thing he had to suggest that
I set "turn off monitor" to 'never' in the Toshiba Power Options
Menure(found in
Control Panel). As described by others, that is a workaround., not a fix.
The Toshiba
Technician was not wiling to admit they had a problem with the product (I
think most likely
in the BIOS), but they obviously do.

Another observation:

Even when the screen is blank, one can login with remote desktop from
another computer. That still doesn't wake up the screen, and if one wants
to work locally,
a hard power reset is the only fix I have found so far. However, if you
have a critical application
running and need to save data, the remote desktop will let you do that while
the screen is blank.

Re: Toshiba M400 Freezes up in Standby
Does the Standby problem depend on the amount of RAM installed? I did not
see the problem until the upgrade from 512 MB to 1 GB RAM. There is a
hibernation problem that kicks in at 1 GB RAM (see
http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000555.html). I wonder if this is
related.

Re: Toshiba M400 Freezes up in Standby
The Hibernation problem was solved, with a fix issued through Microsoft KB
article 909095 back in October, 2005:

Re: Toshiba M400 Freezes up in Standby
The fix is discussed and linked to in the URL I gave. Are you saying that
people with the Standby problem should install this fix? Are you saying
that you think there is (or is not) a relation between the Standby problem
and the hibernation problem?
