SATA requires SATA support.
SCSI requires SCSI support
and, naturally,
IDE requires IDE support, even though it is common.

Hi Mike,

SATA is Serial ATA.  It's a technology that uses high speed serial
communication.  It works with SATA drives and has a very narrow
connector/cable.  Not sure if it's just two conductors or not.

IDE is a colloquialism for the a the parallel technology that uses a
lot conductors (pairs of cables running physically parallel supply
multiple bits worth of electrical signalling in parallel in time) and
flat wide ribbon cables.  UltraATA is a high speed parallel ATA
technology.  An ATA/IDE hard drive has this wide multipin connector,
and plugs into the usual parallel ribbon IDE cable.

Whiel you can add an SATA controller to a motherboard that has only
IDE, but you won't be able to mix SATA and IDE hard drives on an IDE
channel.

Likewise, if you have a new motherboard that comes only with
integrated SATA controllers, you'd need to drop in an ATA card if you
wanted to re-use any IDE drives you've got lying around.     On the
other hand, most newer mobos I've seen have both SATA (for hard disks)
and parallel IDE for the optical drives.
