Hello All,

I bought this Satellite 2430-402 system a year back in May 2003. I got
WinXP Home Edition preinstalled, which i upgraded to WinXP Pro at that
time only. It has been working fine ever since then. Recently, the
machine started shutting down(power off) automatically whenever I
start a CPU intensive program or install some software. Even Norton
Antivirus cannot complete a full system scan. Essentially, if there is
too much read/write in the HDD then the system fails. I have just
found in the newsgroups about the design flaw in Toshiba Satellite
which causes overheating but what is the solution? I'm not finding any
solution for the problem. What can be done? Its one year warantee has
also expired last week!!! Any clue will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks and regards

Start with a can of "dust cleaner" available at any computer supply.
Thoroughly blow out the fan inlet(s) and exhaust port(s). Blow back the
exhaust ports last to move any obstructions out of the fan inlet. You
will probably notice an immediate improvement.

The second step is to access the interior in order to visually check for
accumulations. If you have a pet cat or dog, there is undoubtedly a
furball (!) in the fan outlet that can only be removed by accessing the
mainboard, usually by removing the keyboard.

I have the EXACT same problem only weeks after the manufacturers warranty ran out, luckily i purchased extended insurance, however, to avoid the 6 week return to base repair I'd like to find an alternative solution, did clearing out the vents work?

I am reporting to Executive Vice President of Toshiba's
customer relations. They MUST either refund cost of laptop + cost to get ANOTHER LAPTOP up AND RUNNING OR face a costly LAW-suit. I shall contact to Attorney also.

If you are interested to add your name in the list also then please post your name and email ids.

Hi All, Just thought I would let you know - I have a Toshiba Satellite that I purchased in december which started overheating and shutting off about a month ago. It would do this on a daily basis, I cam to this site a few days ago to see what people had to say about this problem and came across this post. I followed the advice of the second poster and bought a can of air. IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You would not believe the dust ball that came out, now I have longer battery life and NO overheating problems. WOW. Just thought I would let you know, it's something to try.

Hello All,

I bought Satellite 1905-S301 system in Dec 2002. I upgraded my machine to Win 2000 at that time only. Last few months my
machine started shutting down automatically whenever I try to install some software or run Norton Antivirus. I found in this newsgroup abt the design flaws. I am just wondering if Toshiba has fixed any computer or replaced it with a new one. Any response will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Sunil.

Guys,

I have a toshiba 2435-S255 that I bought about 18 months ago. In the last 3-4 months I stated noticing a similar problem where the laptop would shutown due to overheating.

After reading the posts on this and other forums I found someone suggesting a "dust cleaner".
Well I did not buy a dust cleaner but instead bought a $3.49 precision screw-driver and opened the plate that covers the heat sink. And sure enough about 50% of the openings in the heatsink going from the fan to the outside where blocked. I took the heatsink out and blew the dust away. Also took some cotton swabs, dipped into my wife's nail polish remover (try this part at your risk :-)) and cleaned the fan area...rebooted the laptop and the problem disappeared.
Now I have the laptop running over 24hours and hasn't shutdown even once. I have been running disk intensive programs just to heat it up and still no problems!!!. Previously it wouldn't stay running for more an hour

So guys please do yourself a favor and clean the heatsink fan system. You will see a difference. If you want to check if there is any dust blocking the fan system before opening it up then simply blow into the opening where the hot air leaves and you will see dust come out of the fans.

Hope this helps!

I also have this problem, but mine is ridiculous.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A75-S2762. I JUST bought this computer in June, and it has been overheating since August or so. This is COMPLETELY unacceptable for a brand new computer.

There is no dust clogged in the vents. I needed to restore the computer to its original state and I couldn't even run the utility because it would overheat 25% through. The only way I got it to work was to elevate the rear of the unit and have a fan blowing on it.

Completely ridiculous. I called Toshiba and demanded a refund and they said they have no refund policy. They want me to send it to them and to PAY FOR SHIPPING. The computer is under warranty and it has already been in the shop TWICE. A BRAND NEW COMPUTER!

I tried calling the number above to reach the VP but he never called back. I will try again tomorrow.

Any other advice!?

Hiya

Do bear with me as i barely know anything about computers :P

However, while looking for info on a different problem im having, i found this one...

I Have a tosh 2430-402, which i bought last summer, and i too had over heating problems. I kept meaning to sort it, then when i realised my warranty was just about to rin out, i phoned toshiba who came and collected my laptop and had a look at it, even though i was a few days over my warranty.

Anyway, over heating must have caused a problem, coz they replaced something (sorry i cant remember what it was...heating module!?)

However, my other problem was that i thought the adaptor would go through dodgy stages...they didnt find a problem with my battery or adaptor.

Now however, Ive noticed my battery isnt charging sometimes, even though its recognising that its plugged into the wall...it turns off without warning me that the battery is low...also sometimes, it doesnt register that its plugged into the wall....so im thinking there may be a problem with both my battery and my charger?

Does anyone have any feedback on this?

If anyone does, please make it in dummy language as im certainly not very tecnical :D

Anyway, the long and the short of it is, i too have had over heating problems...but that seems to have cleared up when they took it in...but it seems to be turning off now when the battery runs out...as if ive just unclipped the battery out the bottom (whines when i do that, and whines when it turns off coz of the battery)

Hmm i have a feeling i might not be making much sense now...so ill wait for any replies before i go on any further!

Reading this thread was good though! tis obviously an ongoing problem huh!

Thanks in advance

Most of the problem is caused by the build up of material blocking the airflow for the CPU. If you catch this early enough a simple cleaning of the heatsink with prolong the life. The biggest problem is that the longer you use it while it overheats increases the chances that you could fry your system board and/or CPU. It's also recommended that you apply mor thermal paste to the heatsink. I work for a Toshiba Authorized Service Center and usually takes us a hour to clean out and apply more heatsink paste. If the unit is in warranty there is no cost to you. If its out of warranty A good tech should not charge you more than 1 hr labor. I hope this helps you all.

Well whatever they did seemed to have sorted it in terms of it over heating...however im still having problems wth either the battery and/or adapter.

Ive got too much uni work to do to sort it out incase they want to take it in...so im just going to grin and bear it for a bit...but i have a feeling its a problem with both the battery and the adapter coz its never the same problem...its either the adapter not working (the light doesnt show up on the front of the laptop) or the battery not working (that light doesnt show up either) it does my head in because it suddenly decides to not want to work and the only way i can sort it is by turning off the laptop and unclipping the battery, or by leaving the adapter unplugged for a while...maybe the adapter is overheating?

QUAOAR (or anyone else that can help me!): I have a Toshiba Satellite A75=S206 and have been experiencing random, intermittent BSODs, with a variety of STOP codes. I've been researching on the internet and much of what I find regarding similiar symptoms reference cleaning the fans, heatsink, thermal compound, etc., as the solution. I reinstalled Windows XP and did not add any additional programs or drivers; in fact, I installed nothing but Windows, and the computer keeps crashing, sometimes during movement of the laptop, as well as while the unit is on a stable service and not touched. I ran Toshiba's diagnostic utility and all the hardware passed the testing, with the exception of the floppy drive (which the unit does not have) and something called i.link (might this be the problem?) The computer is still under warranty; however Toshiba has about ticked me off regarding the resolution of this problem; that is, if I talk to someone that speaks decent English. Can you possibly provide me with step-by-step instructions on how to access and clean the heatsink and fans? Also, the system specs indicated this particular model is equipped with 512MB of total physical memory, yet the system information indicates 448MB....what's the deal with that? I would VERY much appreciate any suggestions.

Here is our Satellite tale of woe. Does it sound familliar to anyone else. Has anyone found a good fix?
When plugged into AC and booted up, the green plug light shows on the front. The computer on light glows green. The battery plug is variable. It can be red or blinking red or green or not lit at all. In our case, it is never green anymore and here is why. While plugged in and booted up, if you go into the control panel and look at the toshiba power management area, this is what you see. It shows that the AC power is on. It shows that the battery is, for example, charging. Then, for no reason, it starts using the battery! The battery gets used, is shows it as discharging, until the power becomes critical and if left alone, the computer shuts off. Sometimes, if you catch it at about 30% or so, you can pull the plug and plug it back in and the batter will go from discharge to charge and you are back in business. Other times, no matter how many times you fiddle with it, the battery mode remains dominant and she shuts down. When that happens, you have to wait a bit before turning it back on because the machine seems to need a bit of battery to boot up. I have looked around on line and this doesn't appear to be an isolated problem but I have not seen any useful suggestions for fixing it. I don't even know if it is a hardware or a software problem! We have two satellites, one with the problem and one without. Tried swapping the batteries and or the power cords, didn't make a difference. Suggestions appreciated.

Re: Toshiba Satellite 2435-S55

Well, I just finished buying one of these bad boys off some guy cuz he said it was shutting down on him. Got it for $400. Obviously, it was shutting down on me too. I got on this forum and checked out what you guys had to say. It seems Toshiba really screwed up on the design but you can work around it. I got me a T6 screw driver, opened it up, took out the heatsink and it had what looked like a small rug covering all the openings in the heatsink. Amazing that thing ran at all. Took out the heatsink, got off all the thermal grease, washed the little bastard and sprayed it down with my compressor to get all the moister out. Got the CPU and cleaned it up real nice. Held the fans down with a screw driver and sprayed the inside of the laptop to get allll the dust out. Added some new thermal grease and closed it back up. RUNS PERFECT. Now this was only a few days ago but I did some real cpu intensive stuff (new installation of windows) and it ran fine just sitting on a regular table top (before it would boot off the cd and 20 seconds later shut down). Wasnt even that hot. Turned around and sold it for $650.

Thanks for the tips guys.

Hi people with "Toshiba Satellite 2430-402 overheating problem" I fixed the Problem

I had a coworker get one of these from BEST BUY ant their service sucked and the charger $200 to remove SpyBots and complained that it took a long time to repair them because the Laptop keep over heating & it would take 5 weeks to do the repair from Best Buy after they had paid extra for Service when the get the Laptop in September:

This is how I handled it:
Called Toshiba and told them that I had this documented problem "Toshiba Satellite 2430-402 overheating problem" that I read about on this website. Got a Case# and Directions to Return the Laptop to UPS and with the UPS case # they would have the box & Labels at my UPS Store near my home.

I needed to get my friends Data Off the Laptop because she's going to school and need her work that was never backup. The Laptop was overheating and shut down in about 12 min when first turned on and after heating up it would shut down in a few minutes.

I places it in the Refrigerator until it cooled off: then hooking my external USP Hard Drive to the Laptop and Logging on as Administrator And a simple batch file I XCopy.exe the users folder as a Backup. After logging on I Starting the Backup I place the Laptop in the Refrigerator again until the backup was complete.

Later copying it onto a CD. The Laptop really works well in the Refrigerator!

Also I saw how there wasn't any room for the fans so I placed 2 small pieces of wood 1” square and 8” long under the laptop so that there was some clearance between the Laptop & table. This helped a little. I can’t wait to get it back (Toshiba said a week, we’ll see)

The only solution I have that works for me is I have a box underneath my laptop with icepacks in it.....it stays at a relatively cool temperature and hasnt over heated since. I can run top notch games and programs with out a problem....it also help to just have the fans raised of the surface your using your computer on so they can get air more easily. although this solution is a pain...it is the easiest way.

I had the same problem from three months now and I was using a dedicated pedestal fan behind my laptop, I read your postints and decided to try with Fellowes Air Duster, the laptop is working FLAWLESS I am running a Star Wars Lego Game with no issues, I will give more feed back withing a week to let u know my findings

Okay....I just got tired of it...it got worse..and then it was overtaken by a virus...so badly that only DOS letters showed up for 15 seconds and shut off...I lost everything...and combined with this ridiculous overheating that Toshiba refuses to correct and/or compensate us all for...i have switched to an Apple laptop and it's fabulous...I recommend it highly! Good luck!

I work in a computer shop in aberystwyth in west wales uk, i have come across this problem before. its simply cured by removing the underside panel with the heat caution label on it. then removing the 4 outer screws that hold the heatsink to the cpu. remove the heatsink and clean it well. i usually use an unused paint brush to remove dust, then some brasso or other mild abrasive metal polish to polish the part of the heatsink that comes into contact with the cpu. also clean the contacting surface of the cpu. then apply your heatsink paste, and replace the heatsink. and a can of compressed air can be used for additional cleaning of dust inside the case. it is a pretty silly design because it can clog up really easily.

I have a solution that is working for me. I set the power options for the laptop when plugged into AC power to Mid-Power, instead of full power. The laptop has not shut down since this change. My wife only uses the laptop for websurfing and programming and does not use mulitmedia application so this is working for us.

I have Toshiba A75-S2762 running XP Pro. Same overheating shut down problem. Elevation worked for a few weeks. But now nothing helps. Shuts down within 5-10 minutes - everytime. Clearly a thermal management design problem. Insufficient air flow, heat sink flow passages too small - whatever. POOR DESIGN. Someone should refund purchaser's investment for negligence. Also, I tried to open to clean out fan, etc. after reading these posts. I can't figure out how to get at the fans and heat sinks on this model ???? Anyone who has done on the A75-S2762 post the procedure. Thanks.

if you send me a picture of the bottom side of your laptop ill see if i can remember how u can sort it out if you like. my email is dead_valentine@hotmail.com. u can add me to your msn or just email me the pic if you like. also if there are any removeable panels on the bottom of the pc, take them off before you take the pic. its a pretty simple procedure. the only thing you will need is heatsink compound.

Hope i can help.

I wrote up a good solution for this problem it is in step by step tutorial form. Please be careful this is not a easy solution but im tired of seeing people saying spray it with a dust can that works for about a week and then its screwed again, this one will buy you a few months if not more.

My wife and son have had the same overheating problem with their Toshiba laptops. I tired accessing the solution listed in this posting, but I couldn't get to the page. Would someone else please check this link and see if it is any good? If not, does someone else have the tutorial?

I know. I know.... This reply is way old...

But I wanted to thank you guys and reiterate how easy it is to fix this (at least on the 2435). On the bottom there are two star screws you'll need really small allen wrenches to get into. Open them and take the four philips screws out of the heat sink and pull it straight up (may need a little wiggle). Once it's out, blow it out with compressed air, or... if you're like me.. Doing this at 4AM with no canned air, but a big-XXX air compressor your wife would shoot you for switching on.... Straighten out a paperclip and give each fin a poke and scrape, then blow it out by mouth... Try to get as much dust out as you can. If you have heatsink compound, replace it... If not, just try to keep what you have on there from getting any more dust on it.

It's true, cleaning out the inside of your toashiba will make a world of a difference. But keep in mind that some models are easier to get into than others. I have a satellite A75-S2112 and had to completely dismantle the notebook in order to clean out in between the copper fins and the two fans. Once I got in there I found a familly of dust bunnies living there. Now that the dust is gone I can run in full power mode, run any aplication and my Toshiba doesn't even get as hat as before or shut down. Thanks everyone for your info and good luck with your spring cleaning.

Overheating started for me about six months after purchase. I just bought compressed air, sprayed it on the fans, and right into the processor thing that looks like a miniature radiator grate on the back, and the PC is cool as a cucumber! No more overheating. (And it was BAD, too. It would overheat in just one minute!) Thanks, guys.

Having the same overheating problem. Called Toshiba tech support and they were not at all helpful with the problem. I purchased an extended warranty and added every option you can, but these people are just ridiculous to work with! I would just assume try to repair it myself, even though I am completely tech-stupid. I don’t know anything about heat sink paste – what kind to get (are there different types?) or where to buy it. Also, I don’t know how to apply it. I wanted to check out this link, but it appears to be gone. If anyone still has access to the link and/or if anyone can please help me with the whole heat sink paste thing, I would really appreciate it! I found “silicone heat sink paste” on Radio Shack’s site, but don’t know if it is the right product or not. PLEASE HELP!!!! Thanks!

Your link does not take me directly to info.
Know this is old.. but just tore one down because of power problems, I would plug in and notice the green lights like other reply on battery not charging. After tearing completly apart using an online manual. Before tearing down, the laptop would shut off, I have came across this before and kinda had an idea what it was. This laptop design is really bad, they put the ac in the back.. everybody uses their laptop while in bed, in the recliner etc, well this can add a lot of pressure to the dc jack. Anyway, after i had the motherboard out i checked the solder points on the back of the mb and all was well. The prong inside of the dc jack wiggled pretty bad, so i checked the other side of the board and noticed while i wiggled the prong i could see that the metal housing that surrounded the "black box" was completly cracked on two of the contacts. I went and did a lil searchin and came up with this site.
www.impactcomputers.com/imp-148655
My sat model was a 1005.
I havent got yet but soon as I get it ordered and soldered in ill hopefully have some issues fixed.
and to one of the replies on this subject, he mentioned blow it out by mouth, and he used an air compressor on it. I would not do either if i was trying to fix it. both of these sources contain moisture, that is why they sale the canned air. so uh.... yeah...dont i guess...
