Author Dell Memory? Something I dont Know?

I have a Dimension 8100 that I want to upgrade the memory in...I looked
at 1 gig - and it was almost $600! Is there a reason this memory is
extremely pricey?

Unfortunately the 8100 uses RDRAM which is, as you found out, rather pricey.

If the $600 was a Dell price, you can do somewhat better elsewhere. But be
prepared to pay a premium for RAMBUS memory, now in ever shorter supply.

Go to www.google.com and search under "rambus" or "RDRAM".

Yeah, that was the biggest fear of the RDRAM when it came out. I stayed
away from systems using the RDRAM because I couldn't justify the slight
performance edge for the tripling of the price.

I hate to admit it, but if you can't find the memory cheaper than $600,
I would just consider putting the $600 towards a new machine. That will
get you nearly 1/2 the way there for a machine that will outperform your
8100.

Chris, Try www.4allmemory.com I bought memory from them before and had no
problems, YMMV. They have RDRAM PC800 512MB, two pieces 256MB matched, for
198 and Free Shipping. The 1GB kit is $458. What's in there now? Yeah, I
have an Dimension 8200 that came with 256MB, I needed a new machine for
work. But, I ordered the upgraded 512MB memory (not from Dell) the same day
I ordered the computer, because I had doubts about Rambus's long term
future. Win XP Home with 768MB runs great! Hope that helps, Pat
