| hello
i replaced my noisy airplane fan of my dell 4550 when it died some days ago.
i've replaced it wth some other fan, but i have a problem.
does the fan blow wind onto the heatsink? or does it suck the wind out of
the chassis? the fan has some green construction/tunnel wich guides the
wind.
i've installed it so it blows wind on the heatsink.

| It sucks from the chassis, and blows out the back of the pc.
I replaced my aircraft fan as well with a blower (blows on the sink) from
artic cooling ,The pc has never been so quite. Also fitted a quite fan to
get rid of chassis heat in the original opening at the rear of the pc.

It is supposed to exhaust the air from the chassis rather than pull air in
from the back vent grille. Most of these OEM fans exhaust on the labeled
side of the fan.
Only exception I've seen recently is the 4700, which pulls air IN.

| if running 1 fan, at back of chassis, it should exhaust (suck warm air out)
if running 2 fans (1 front low mount, 1 rear mid to high mount) the front
normally sucks cool air in and the rear exhausts it out. This also permits a
cool airflow past the CPU.
The CPU fan sucks off (no puns now) the CPU.........
this is my interpretation from an article a few years back

| If it's a Dell, it sucks!

I have an old Gateway Essentials (a small flexATX machine) which works the
same way as you've done, with "positive pressure" blowing air through a tunnel
then over the cpu's heatsink. I don't see how it would effectively cool the
heatsink if the air was going out rather than in, since the airflow over the
heatsink would be much less.

Did you fan get noisier over time? I have a 4550 (2 years old now) and
the box is nearly Silent. I usually have to look at the LED lights to
even tell if the machine is running.
As others have reported, my fan sucks the hot air from within the box
and blows it OUT the back of the case.

indead, i've got the same idea !
the only thing that will probably happen is more dust accumulation on the
heatsink i guess
